A question about "Independence Day".....(honest, a real question this time)?

The movie was made in such a way as to pay homage to other science
fiction classics either through dialogue, scene arrangement or
sequence. I could spot only two such examples. One was the scene where
Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum are walking across the desert away from
the burning wreckage ala "The Right Stuff" where Sam Sheperd is doing
the same in his portrayal of Chuck Yeager. The other occurred during
the President-led aerial assault of the alien ship when you could hear
a fighter pilot exclaim "There's too many of them" ala "Star Wars IV"
during the assault of the Death Star.

What are some examples that you detected or know of that can be seen
as a homage to other movies?

I'm supposed to be the resident sci-fi encyclopedia, and a friend of
mine quizzed me on this and lets just say, if I were a baseball
player, my average would be .002 - in the minors.....

Thanks
